The breeze is so cool in the early morning, that it reminds me of fall. In less than a month, the children will be starting back to school. Flowers and grass have that middle-of-summer look. I noticed last night as I watered the Impatiens under the oak tree that they have spread nicely since I planted them this spring. I like the way the red blooms partially cover gray rocks in the flower bed. The container garden has grown and the fountain in that garden continues to attract birds and butterflies with its liquid music. And, my crepe myrtle bushes are starting to bloom! Hallelujah! I was afraid they would not because they were cut back severely several months ago.
Mr. Gray just came for his breakfast, much to the consternation of Nemo, my dog. After he ate, Mr. Gray, in his feline way, strolled off to have a chat with a friend who sauntered up. And Nemo kept a watchful eye on the yard, in case his arch-enemy returned.
Yesterday was a significant day in the history of our Nation and the world, although not much was said about it. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. He spoke these immortal words, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” The Eagle had landed. Before the team left, they planted a small American flag on the surface of the moon. Glued to our television screens, Americans watched in awe. In 1961, President Kennedy had challenged a young, enthusiastic Nation to put a man on the moon before the decade ended. America accomplished that goal.
But time has rolled on and here it is, forty-five years later. Summer has settled in and, as it always does, nature responds to God’s plan for it. One season flows into another, each season having blessings that are peculiar to it. All around us are wars and rumors of wars. If God’s love dwelt in every human heart, there would be no more wars; sadly, it does not. The One who ordered the seasons, placed mankind in the Garden of Eden, and allowed him to set foot on the moon, is still Lord over all. I trust His wisdom and thank Him for watching over us and for each of these summertime blessings that I enjoy.
