Making November Memories

Making November Memories

Where do you go when you need a break from the here and now? Do you pick up a book or close your eyes and think about a place you’ve been or maybe a place you’d like to see some day? Books are wonderful vacations, and so is just letting the mind wander. I like to read and sometimes, I like to pick up a pencil and draw or paint. The 1918 lady here was inspired by a 1918 Woman’s World. I enjoy the fashions of that day. My parents would have been children a hundred years ago, but my grandmother might have worn a dress, hat, and shoes similar to this when she dressed up. Perhaps.

Reminiscing seems to come with the season. Leaves drift down, sunlight slants against the dark trunk of the maple, and I think about the year’s passing. Reminiscing is well and good as long as a person doesn’t over-do it. I’ve got to remember that today is the important thing and some day this fall will be one I’ll look back on and remember.

My brothers and I sometimes talk about people and times past. It’s sobering to know that we are the last generation of our family who remember certain things–classmates and teachers of years ago, cars that they once owned, their ship-board days and the places they’ve been, the houses we’ve lived in, the dogs who were a part of the family and, of course, our parents, our sister and other brothers. I’ve encouraged them to write their memories and I hope they do.

But today there’re chores to do, appointments to keep and another rain that’s coming on for this weekend. So, it behooves me to take advantage of this chilly fall day and see what memories, good, I hope, I can make for tomorrow.
