The Long, Hot Summer Night

The Long, Hot Summer Night

It was the kind of night when squirrels jump from branch to branch just to feel the breeze, when fireflies dutifully light up a few times then crawl under a cool rock. This mystery writer turned on her borrowed box fan (thanks, Dawn) and, knowing it was useless to try writing, attempted to forget the heat by reading. It was a hot summer night. Why was last night hotter than any other summer night? Because my air conditioner wasn’t working!! Hopefully, today it’ll be fixed and things will cool down to normal.

Remember the bread I baked, the honey yeast bread that rose to unsuspected heights of culinary delight? It was delicious. Crusty brown on the outside, moist and flavorful on the inside with just a hint of honey flavor. And, it was easy to make. I recommend it.

I am looking forward to winter simply so the mosquitoes will be gone. They are so awful, not just at night but throughout the day. They never give up. They are avaricious, pernicious, malicious blood-sucking beasts. I am convinced they must have been trained by Dracula himself.

But this morning, hope rises with the dawn. By night, the air conditioner will be working and all will settle down to a cool normal. If not, I’m going to hunt for a shady cabin by a refreshing stream, high in the mountains where the breeze blows through. Ahh. I feel better already.

Answer to today’s mini-mystery: Sara named Nemo because when we got him, he was small, loved water and was decidedly appealing, just like Disney’s clown fish by the same name.

Summer time is an excellent time to escape the heat with a good cozy mystery. Blanche Day Manos
