School has started in my neck of the woods–children and teachers returning to fresh adventures, seeing old friends and making new ones. Hopefully, this will be a fun-filled, safe year for all.
I wondered, as I looked out at bird baths this morning, if birds need to learn bird-things from their parents, or if it just comes naturally to search for bugs, hop into the bird bath for a drink or a refreshing dip, and to fly quick and fast if a cat or dog approaches. Are they pre-programmed to correctly respond or do their parents teach them?
Birds and animals, I’m sure, know many things that they don’t get credit for. Why should they learn our ways? Their own way of doing things suits them fine, making them unique. As we think about fall and a time for learning, we could learn quite a bit from our wild animal and bird neighbors.
Somehow the birds know to go to the same spots every year. I don’t know how. Then there are some that stick around here even during the winter. Also, unfortunately we have some bees that always like to fly back here into holes they drilled on the top side of the patio roof. Strange how that happens every year.
I’ve wondered how they know to go back to the same spot too. We have some that stick around and some that are definitely only winter birds. I wonder if those bees are carpenter bees?
