Laura’s Fury

Laura’s Fury

Is anybody else mesmerized by hurricanes? I watched as Hurricane Laura approached the Gulf last night, anxiously waiting to hear where she landed and with what force. Cameras showed bending trees and flying debris as the fury of a category four hurricane struck  Lake Charles, Louisiana. And then, this morning, daylight is showing the destruction.

Of course, the main danger is the storm surge. I can think of not many things more terrifying than the ocean rolling onto land, coming and coming until houses are submerged.

Texas was cautious, especially Galveston, remembering, I’m sure the awfulness of the hurricane that obliterated much of the island in 1900. However, Louisiana appears to have borne the brunt of Laura.

We in Arkansas won’t be exempt from the storm, either, the southern part of the state in particular. Northwest Arkansas may benefit with much-needed rain. I sure hope so.

The actions of people can create havoc, but nothing can compare with the unleashed fury of nature. Nature is beautiful and ordered, but can also be ferocious. It well behooves us to treat it with respect.
