One of the best places to give a book talk is among people you like and those who like you. That’s where I was yesterday at the senior luncheon. After eating, Milly introduced me and I told the group about my three Darcy and Flora cozy mysteries, The Cemetery Club, Grave Shift, and Best Left Buried, whose published date is November 1. The display board was set up with the book posters, blurbs and teasers, the microphone was in place and so began fifteen or twenty minutes of sharing about one of the things I love most: writing.
Before beginning the talk, I had asked my friend Linda to hand out my business cards on the backs of which were taped small Hershey’s candy. She also handed out the 10% off coupons from Pen-L Publishing. If you look closely, you’ll see a coffee cup in front of the display board. The reason? Darcy and Flora solve a lot of mysteries over a cup of Folgers at Flora’s hundred-year old dining table or at Dilly’s cafe in downtown Levi, Oklahoma. Of course, chocolate goes well with coffee and certainly helps the thinking process.
“It may seem strange to some,” I told my assembled friends, “that a mild-mannered, silver-haired retired kindergarten teacher would turn to a life of crime in her golden years. However, I don’t consider it odd at all, especially if the murder and mayhem happen only on the pages of the books she writes.”
Today, my publishers will send the eproofs and I will proof-read and re-edit if needed. Altogether, it is an exciting, busy time and I can hardly wait for my three cozy mysteries, The Cemetery Club, Grave Shift, and Best Left Buried to make their appearances on the stage of the great big world of readers!Curtain time? November 1.
