It was on a murky Monday, a cold, gray beginning to the work week that I sat at my computer, glancing out of the window now and then. Tree branches, black and bare, reached scraggly fingers toward the sky. A flock of blackbirds swooped in and settled on the lawn. They pecked busily at unseen insects hidden under the grass, then swooped out again, bound for some destination unknown to me.
It was on that Monday, that cold and bleak Monday, that I determined to live only for one moment at a time throughout the day. If I was drinking coffee, I’d savor the flavor, the heat, the reviving power of it. I’d even be aware of the smooth mug beneath my fingers.
Whatever each part of that Monday allowed, I would live completely in it, not in the past with its will-o-the-wisp memories, not in the future with its unknown, frightening possibilities, but in the here and now because this was the only particle of time that was allowed me. I would be aware and enjoy it and determine to make the very most of each minute of the day. This is what I determined for myself, my goal and purpose for a dark and wintry Monday.
