It doesn’t take much to put a sparkle in my day. Yesterday, I thought about the Halloween pumpkin. You see, it’s this way–my grandchildren and I have made it a yearly tradition to give our Halloween pumpkin that sits on my front porch for a month or so, a chance at a new life. It was a fun thing for them and a science lesson, and an illustration of continuing life.
I admit that my grandchildren out-grew this ritual quite a few years back. I started it for them; now, they keep it up for me. They know it’s a way for me to hang onto their childhood. So, each November, we three carry that round, orange fellow to the back fence. Then, together, we say: Pumpkin, pumpkin, big and round, spread your seeds upon the ground. Slumber ‘neath the ice and snow so next year, brand-new ones will grow. Then, they raise that old pumpkin up and smash it on the ground. We cover it with leaves and a bit of dirt, and leave it to nature.
So, yesterday, I took a look at the place where the pumpkin landed. Tiny, new plants poked up from the leaves. Aha! Our old pumpkin! How wonderful.
On the way back to the house, I glanced down. My back yard is still sort of damp and muddy from previous rains and, let’s face it, it’s a hard place for grass to grow. There, at my feet, dear mystery readers, was a clue. Somebody had recently passed this way. Like any good detective, I took a picture. I’ll leave it up to you to decide whose foot made this.
Life is full of real-life mysteries: the mysteries of nature and continuing life and springtime. And, I thought of a Scripture: Genesis 8:22 – While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
In these days of uncertainty, there are some things that do not change.
