This morning, I am pleased to present an interview with fellow Pen-L Publishing author, Janet K. Brown.
Blanche: Why did you decide to write?
Janet: I don’t think I chose writing. It chose me. Ha! Recently, I told my story about what sparked my creativity at castlegatepress.com.
I have written most of my life. Job & family responsibilities bogged me down, so that I gave it up for awhile, but the desire would never leave. When I retired, I dove in as a second career.
B.: What kind of book or books do you write? Do you stick with one genre?
J.: Actually, I’m not too smart on that score. Wise advisors say stick with 1 genre and label yourself under it. I began writing inspirational romance, but the first book to sell was my one and only young adult. Then, over a four year period, God gave me devotions to share that help me with my overeating compulsion, so that ended with the publishing of Divine Dining. Next thing, I know, I’m writing a women’s fiction about a woman struggling through the difficulties of life by turning to food as her comfort. So, this women’s fiction is now my third genre.
I do have a label though, and it’s the name of my blog, “Writing with God’s Hope.” All three books center around there being hope in Christ for any addiction, compulsion, or hang-up.
B.: How long have you been writing?
J.: Since junior high, but I began studying and submitting long fiction when I retired in 2006.
B.: When you decide on a book, do you choose the title before or after you write?
J.: I chose Victoria and the Ghost before I began to write, and it never changed. Divine Dining was chosen by my publisher. I had named it God’s Way or the My Way. With this last book, I used two other working titles and had finished the novel before I chose Worth Her Weight. The publisher didn’t change that one.
B.: Do you know the outcome from the first or do you let the story evolve as you write?
J.: I know the beginning and the end and from that, decide on possible plot points before I write anything.
B.: What books do you have in the works now?
J.: I’m going through edits with the publisher on my contracted YA sequel while working on a sequel to Worth Her Weight.
B.: What are your writing plans for the future?
J.: Maybe, I’ll stay with only 3 genres now with sequels to both the YA ghost series and the new series on compulsions/addictions. I also contract for both teen and adult short stories.
Blurb for Worth Her Weight

LACEY CHANDLER helps her mother, her sister, her friend, and then she binges on food and wonders is there really a God?
BETTY CHANDLER hates being handicapped and useless, so she lashes out at the daughter that helps, and the God who doesn’t seem to care.
TOBY WHEELER loves being police chief in Wharton Rock, but when the devil invades the small town, he can’t release control.
Is God enough in Wharton Rock?

Janet K. Brown lives in Wichita Falls, Texas with her husband, Charles. Writing became her second career after retirement from medical coding.
Worth Her Weight will be the author’s debut inspirational women’s fiction, but it makes a perfect companion to her recently released, Divine Dining: 365 Devotions to Guide You to Healthier Weight and Abundant Wellness. Both books encompass her passion for diet, fitness, and God’s Word.
Worth Her Weight marks Brown’s third book. Who knew she had a penchant for teens and ghosts? She released her debut novel, an inspirational young adult, Victoria and the Ghost, in July, 2012.
Janet and her husband love to travel with their RV, visit their three daughters, two sons-in-law and three perfect grandchildren, and work in their church.
