Idling Into Thursday

Idling Into Thursday

A person’s thoughts are never really idle–disconnected, maybe, scattered here and there. That’s what mine are this morning. I look out at my wet, soggy ground and wonder if I’ll have a chance to get the last of my herbs planted today. Yesterday was a wild weather day. Wind lashed the trees and rain poured down in torrents. The roadside ditch where the children used to sail their leaf boats was rampaging. By the time I turned on the TV to watch for weather updates, the meteorologists were giving some mighty scary reports. So, we may have been under a tornado watch. I rather think we were.

Several times during the day, I glanced out my bathroom window at the feathered family who lives on the window ledge in a snug little nest. Where was Mama Robin? Each time I looked, all I saw were the tiny, bobbing heads of the babies. They would get cold. They would be hungry. Had something terrible happened to their mother? But, next time I noticed, she was there. Whew! What a relief. The lives of birds are fraught with danger and if the old bird dies, so do the babies.

While the plots of future mystery stories are swirling in my head, I’m working on a watercolor of an echinacea flower, a coneflower. It would seem that one simple flower wouldn’t be that hard to do, but I haven’t gotten past the background yet. It’s a wet on wet background with colors swirled together, sort of like my thoughts of another mystery. Sounds easy, but, believe me, it’s not. If it turns out all right, I’ll share a photo.

Nemo is snoozing on the floor. I don’t think he worries about the weather or birds or the plot to another book. He takes life as it comes, ready to play, my faithful little shadow everywhere I go. He has shelter, he has food, he is comfortable. His thoughts don’t seem to be scattered. He concentrates on what’s important at the time. And, at this time, it’s having a nice morning nap.
