I have so much for which I’m thankful this Thanksgiving, it would be hard to name all my blessings. I’m grateful for the freedom to worship, for my precious family, for my dear friends, old friends and new friends. I’m thankful, too, for those of you who visit my website.
I tried to take a picture of one of the many squirrels who regularly raid the bird feeders but it didn’t come out well enough to post. I guess he was enjoying a pre-Thanksgiving dinner. One of the joys of winter is watching the birds feast on black sunflower seeds in the feeders. The squirrels, as my son says, are tree rodents and can be really pesky and destructive but they are entertaining as well.
This gourd turkey has been with me through thick and thin. He stays tucked away for most of the year but during late November, he decides to come out of hiding and see what’s going on in the world of people. He doesn’t say much but I’m sure that under that black hat, there’s a lot of wisdom gained from years of living. If you’ll look closely, you’ll see long-suffering in those acrylic eyes. Like those of us at a certain age, he has seen a lot of changes through the years; in fact, he has changed quite a bit, himself. He began life as a mere seed, believe it or not, and was plucked from the vine when he was just at the right stage. After drying for months and months and a good scrubbing with an S.O.S. pad, he was ready to be transformed through paints and brush into a gentleman turkey. As an artist friend of mine would have said, there was a turkey in that gourd just waiting for a chance to come out. He traveled with me from Oklahoma to Arkansas and has been a silent and colorful companion through several seasons. I do believe I heard him say that he would like to join me in wishing each one of you a safe, healthy, and joyous Thanksgiving!
