Is it a habit or is it a quirk?
Bad habits should be broken; good habits, encouraged.
A friend of mine said when she swept her sidewalk, she always counted a specific number of swipes with the broom. Habit or quirk?
In Sunday School, I sit at a certain table with people I’ve known for a few years. I like that table; I feel comfortable there. I’ve noticed other people in the class doing the same thing. It would be good if some Sunday we played musical chairs and everyone got up and shuffled to different tables. We’d get to know other people and get out of that groove. That habit, however, is comfortable and it’s easier to stay in it than to get out of it.
Sometimes children have a favorite stuffed animal that they must have at bedtime, or they can’t fall asleep. It’s a habit, but there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s comforting.
In writing cozy mysteries, Ned and her friends have a habit of meeting at Grandy’s coffee shop. It’s a habit they all enjoy. Ned, however, has a habit of becoming involved in mysteries. This, sometimes is not comfortable and can be downright dangerous. I have a habit of writing about her escapades. When I write, I have a cup of coffee on the desk in front of me. Could I write without the coffee? Maybe, but I don’t intend to try. And, so it goes.
