Green and Growing

Green and Growing

The sky is dark with clouds, the ground is saturated and the plants are green and growing. My Arkansas Traveler tomato plants are especially healthy-looking. I hope they produce lots of tomatoes. The grape vine by the front porch is still green and alive. That’s hopeful. This spring, I’m giving the space that usually has flowers to plants and herbs. Basil, mint, sage, all have a place in my planter garden. I do have a few flowers–the geraniums are beautiful too, but, I wonder–is a geranium an herb? The dianthus under the oak loves the rain.

Downtown, the train chugs in. I hear its whistle. Not the lonesome whistle of the trains of my childhood, but it’s loud and memorable. After a long, cold winter, it seems the world is waking, growing, stretching its limbs to meet the springtime and I’m grateful.
