Yesterday, as Sara and I sat in the porch swing eating ice cream, I was reminded of one of my favorite commercials: a farmer has had a harrowing day of lightning strikes, being chased by a bull, etc., but at the end of the day, he sits down with a bowl of ice cream and decides it has been a pretty good day.
If you have a pet, you know that they can lend flavor to life and, perhaps, bring on a few more gray hairs. After a trip to get part of his winter fur trimmed, the children and I noticed that Nemo was bleeding. At first, we thought it was his paws then we decided it was his tongue. When he got into my car, he must have bitten his tongue. The sheet I had spread over the back seat had several bloody spots. “Okay,” I said, “let’s get him to the vet.” So, we started in that direction but before getting there, Nemo stopped bleeding, so we skipped the vet. Back at the house, as I was putting him in the yard, he twisted out of his collar, and, like a shot, took off up the street. Sara streaked after him. I hobbled along behind (We stayed in the yards. It’s never a good idea to chase a dog in the street, both dog and chaser could get hit by a car.) Anyway, with her help, we got the runaway pooch confined and back in the yard. Next, we had to wash off his pinkish feet. He didn’t necessarily want to cooperate but at last, Nemo was pretty and clean and safely in his own back yard. That was when Sara and I felt that we deserved to sit down in the porch swing, have some ice cream, and recuperate. So, we did.
The day could have been nerve-wracking and tension-inducing except for Sara. She was right there to share and help. Life’s hurdles, both small and great, are made a lot less irksome with the support of family and friends. Someone to come alongside and share the good and the bad can turn a stormy day into a sunny one.
You know Who else was there yesterday (and He’s still here today)? God! God is always with His children, whether the experiences are good, bad, or indifferent. He is the One who lets me know I am never alone, even when I appear to be. And that makes each day a truly good one.
