This morning, I’m praying for my family, friends, and for everyone in the path of Hurricane Harvey. I can only imagine the devastation, look at the pictures on the news this morning, and marvel at the strength of the wind and the waves and the lives disrupted. I’ve never been in a hurricane and never wish to be, but I think it is one of the most frightening faces of nature.
To me, the most terrifying part would be the influx of the sea. Flooding, winds, lightning, and spin-off tornadoes are deadly but the strength and fury of a raging sea would probably cause me to collapse on the spot.
Many books have been written about the hurricane that destroyed Galveston in 1900, including this one by Charles River Editors. The people had no warnings, as we have now. So many acts of courage came out of that storm. People helping people; people risking their lives and sometimes losing them to save someone else. I’m sure this hurricane will reveal the same courage and selflessness. Knowing something of the spirit of Texans, I know they will recover.
The meteorologists tell us that flooding will be a main issue with Harvey. Torrential rains will continue for days. So, danger will last for a while. I hope that no lives will be lost but I’m afraid there will be. Those of us who are safely inland can help in many ways; the most important way is prayer, and then giving what we can to those who are in need.
