October and Fall
Yesterday, fall came to my fireplace mantel.
Down came the pictures and lamps that had been there. Up went the painted gourds I’ve kept for years. With a few tiny lights added, it looks quite festive. All the gourds but two were my artistic efforts with acrylics. Sara painted the ghost when she was a little girl. The gourd with the white top came from a craft fair.
The highlights of this week were the Cozy Critique and the arrival of the box of Darcy and Flora’s latest mystery, Grave Heritage. And, of course, my first book signing! Another thing to mark the week was the slow advance of fall. A few more leaves are turning. Garden spiders are evident here and there, in their zippered webs, waiting patiently for the unlucky fly to drop in. Remember that old poem:
“Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly,
‘Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I’ve a many curious things to show when you are there.”
“Oh no, no,” said the little Fly, “to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne’er come down again.”
2/3 C. sugar 2 egg yolksl/4 C. cocoa 2 Tablespoons real butter6 Tablespoons flour 1 tsp. vanillaPinch of salt 2 C. milkStir together sugar, cocoa, flour, and salt. Add milk a little at a time, stirring as you go. Beat eggs yolks a bit before adding them. Add butter. Cook over a medium heat, stirring constantly. (If you don’t stir, it scorches.) Bring to a boil and continue stirring until the mixture thickens to pudding consistency. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Pour into bowls and chill it or eat it warm.
When he first wakes up each morning, he feels he should have a chewy bone and, since I’m too busy writing to play with him, he goes back to taking a nap.
Fun post and thanks for sharing Flora’ s recipe
