Did you know that Arkansas experienced a series of earthquakes last Sunday? Evidently, we did. I didn’t feel any of them but a lot of people did. What caused this shaking of the ground we walk on? One article said to blame it on Bull Shoals Lake. It has risen forty-two feet since the first of March and that’s a lot of added weight on the lake basin. Evidently, these earthquakes (and there were maybe seven of them) were not associated with the New Madrid fault which runs through part of Arkansas.
Earthquakes are happening all over the place. Even under Yellowstone National Park. That’s pretty scary to me, considering the huge lava cauldron that is said to be beneath the ground there.
Whatever the reason, when the ground shakes under my feet, it is a cause of concern. It is scary. Lots of things are happening in the world that are downright frightening. Political, social, all sorts of upheavals, and it’s hard to find a stable area anywhere that isn’t changing.
When I was a child, I didn’t have to worry about things like earthquakes–tornadoes, maybe, but not earthquakes. Today’s children, however, have a lot of stuff that concerns them. In the midst of all this, they (and we all) need something to count on, someone to trust, stability. Children need reassurance that no matter what happens, they will still be loved and protected and cared for. Come to think of it, we never out-grow this need. It’s kind of a nice place for adults to be too.
The Bible is an ancient book and its truths haven’t changed. God’s laws are still God’s laws. Right is right and wrong is wrong. That’s a comforting thought. It’s something I can count on and hang onto. It’s a solid rock that doesn’t move. God loves His creation and I’m thankful.
