When you look at the picture below this post, do you see a beautiful dragonfly, green gauzy wings iridescent in the sun, able to fly in six different directions, snapping up mosquitoes, gnats, and other annoying pests? You don’t? That is actually what this little creature is–a dragonfly in its early stages of development. In a previous blog, I posted a picture of an adult dragonfly. Compare the two pictures. What a difference!
My brother, who lives in Minnesota, sent this picture. He found the little dragonfly naiad in a flower-pot as he was preparing his yard for winter. He recognized it, not as an ugly bug, but as a valued mosquito catcher, a true marvel of God’s creation and he tossed it into Little Sand Lake. There, it will continue its life cycle. It may stay in the water for as long as five years, busily eating and growing, in the process of becoming. One day, this small, dark naiad will climb out of the water, and up a reed. Clinging to that slender stem, it will split just behind its head and crawl out of its dark suit, taking on the attributes of a new identity and a new lifestyle. Pumping up its fragile, see-through wings, it will go zipping off into the springtime, the sun bouncing off its dazzling new self. This transformation is amazing and another example of a miracle, something only God can do.
I believe when God looks at us, His ultimate creation, He sees us as remarkable creatures with great potential. He values us now, in whatever stage of becoming we are in, but He knows that we have the ability to climb to dizzying heights. He sees us as His beautiful work of art and loves us, no matter what we look like to others. This is an encouraging thought, especially for a writer. We keep writing, being the best we can be, and one day we will soar through the world of avid readers, the sun of accomplishment on our literary wings.
