A brand new month, calendar page is pretty and clean, spring is coming, winter is going, so we’d better have our bags all packed and ready for March.
Things to pack: a positive attitude, lots of smiles, optimism, hope, friendliness, hospitality, sympathy (and empathy too) curiosity, energy, fresh ideas, sunny outlook.
Things to leave behind: grumpiness, sour disposition, old hatreds, hang-ups, ill health, sadness, worry, fear, misery, prejudices, don’t care attitude.
March abounds with weather lore, folklore, poems, fact and fiction. It’s an unreliable month, rather unstable as the seasons change from winter to spring. Here are a few things to consider, just for fun:
O March, is this the reason that you’re such a restless thing? You’re not at home with winter and you’re not at home with spring.–Author Unknown.
In come the March winds,
They blow and blow,
They sweep up the brown leaves
That green ones may grow.
–George Washington Wright Houghton, American poet (1850–91)
Some more weather lore:
“A moon lying on its back is a dry moon. You can hang your hat on its horns.”
“No lightning will strike a barn that shelters swallows.“
“Red sky at night, sailors’ delight; red sky of morning, sailors take warning.”
“A sunshiny shower won’t last an hour.”
“When flies are sticky and bite, rain is on the way.”
“When robins don’t fly high, bad weather is coming.”
Here’s more of Blanche Manos’ weather lore and wise sayings, fresh-sprung from my mind this morning:
A cloudy sky at break of day could mean that rain is on the way.
A robin pausing on the ground is listening for a wormish sound.
To keep the blues and blahs away, read a mystery every day.
I especially like that last line!
