Disaster at the Homestead

Disaster at the Homestead

The house had been built with a big chimney on the side that ran up both levels of the structure and extended about six feet above the roof to allow escaping embers from the upstairs fireplace to cool before falling back onto the roof. But now, instead of the tall chimney, there was only a jagged stump of mortar and bricks. In the growing light, I could see loose bricks lying across the shingles and on the ground. Several large pieces littered the yard.

The earthquake’s destruction took my breath away. Creeping closer, I was in for an even bigger shock. A pair of denim-clad legs stuck out from under the largest chunk of the chimney. The jeans ended above tan western boots. One foot pointed toward the sky; the other lay twisted at an impossible angle. – Grave Shift
