Five of us cozy critters were animatedly discussing the fine points of word meanings, sentence construction, and the best way of saying what we want to say, all in keeping with publishers’ and editors’ guidelines when it hit. I believe this is called an unexpected twist in the plot because no one at the table was expecting it.
“That’s a really strong wind,” someone said. I glanced out the patio door in time to see the outdoor carpet on the deck fly up against the railing. The maple tree in the back yard was doing some sort of wild and violent dance and a constant roar met my ears. This lasted for quite a long while. At first, I thought it was an errant gust but it kept on and on. The wind carried very little rain with it but in other parts of the state and in Oklahoma, people were blessed with a downpour.
Of course, writers are single-minded, strong-willed, and fearless. So, we persevered, continuing despite the threatening gale raging outside. We were like intrepid heroines, dealing with forces beyond our control! And,before the critters left at the usual time, the wind had gone on to other, more southern parts. As I listened to the weather news later, I found that the phenomenon we experienced is known as a derecho. Derecho comes from the Spanish word meaning straight; a hard, straight wind, rather like a mild inland hurricane.
It was good to have our group together again, minus Jane, but I hope she is back at our next meeting. We missed you, Jane! And, we were delighted to welcome a new critter, Janet. I hope you make our group a regular part of your month, Janet. It was great to have you here.
Helen was back from a long trip to the Northwest and she had some writing victories to share: sales to Vision and also The Secret Place. Janet writes inspirational articles from her own unique viewpoint and I can’t wait to hear a few, next time. Peg is busy reading a series by Donna Andrew and another by Laurie Cass. Nancy is in the editing phase of The Grace Impact, her devotional book that will see the light of day in a few months. And, I shared that Barbara’s and my Darcy/Flora cozies should make their debut the last of September or the first of October. Derecho or no derecho, the cozy critique went on!
