Daylight

Daylight

This first cup of coffee is having a tough time making inroads on pre-dawn drowsiness. But, reinforced by a second cup of steaming brew, I’m counting on the caffeine.

Do you ever watch a commercial that must have taken an astounding amount of money to produce and, when it finishes, wonder what it was promoting? I remember a business class at Northeastern wherein I was taught the advertiser should put the name of the product, a picture of the product, front and center. It was the subject of the ad. Times have changed, haven’t they? And so have commercials.

Same is true of political opponents or any other competitors. Why would you give them free air time by mentioning their names or showing somebody else’s picture? Seems pretty silly to me.

Words are the stock in trade of a writer but have you ever seen such an assault on the wording people choose to use? What happened to free speech? A difference of opinion any more is called an “attack”. Well, no, to me an attack is something a little more vicious than simply stating a differing viewpoint. Sometimes the news media reminds me of a pack of hungry wolves, following a herd of deer, just waiting for the chance to jump in and inflict harm. Or, am I over-reacting?

Today is a special day for a number of reasons. It would have been the birthday of my brother, Thurman. I miss that big, blond brother, out-spoken and easy-going. Thurman also shared birthdays with these famous people: Jacqueline Kennedy, Beatrix Potter, and Darryl Hickman.

On July 28, 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted. How much do we know about our Constitution and the rights it gives us?

What will I do to make this day memorable and when it ends, to look back on it and see some accomplishments, friendships strengthened or started, somebody’s life a little bit happier, my house a little bit cleaner, and Darcy and Flora’s fourth adventure farther down the road to being finished? As I look at that list and see the inroads into pre-dawn darkness daylight has already made, I believe it’s time for thoughtful reflection and another cup of coffee!

I am enjoying my coffee this morning too. A loud thunderstorm just rolled through and the world outside is smelling fresh and clean. Of course, that is only my opinion.

  2. My Minnesota brother said they’ve been getting thunderstorms too. I really like a good thunderstorm and we are needing rain yet again. Thanks for writing.
