Helen and I held down the fort at the Cozy Critter Critique yesterday. All the other critters had good reasons for not being present: a doctor’s appointment, a new grandbaby, vacationing, a sick husband. But Helen and I had a good time. She is a prolific writer of Christian devotionals and always is able to find a home for her work. One of her gifts must be “encourager” because her writings hone in on down-to-earth problems and how faith gets us through.
Except, sometimes Helen’s stories are not down to earth but involve intervention by a Higher Power. Her personal experience, Ice Water in the Desert, was recently published in a book, Heavenly Company by Cecile Murphey and Twila Belk. This is a true account and cannot be explained in any other way than heavenly intervention.
This fall Helen will have two more devotionals in two separate books plus a third one in yet a different publication next spring. I’m looking forward to reading them.
Yesterday, I was privileged to critique “Shaking Inwardly”, a story Helen wrote comparing the molten lava, ash, and smoke belched from volcanoes to wrong and hurtful words and deeds people are capable of.
“A Reflection” was a beautiful comparison of the beauties of Mr. Adams and Mt. Ranier to Christians reflecting the grandeur of God.
We discussed Fright of the Silvery Moon and Helen offered some sound suggestions on the course I’ve set for Ned McNeil. They sound pretty good to me!
As well as being a gifted writer and a keen observer of human nature, Helen is a dear friend. It’s nice to get together for a cozy critter chat.

and other mysterious places where puzzling situations and dangerous encounters are said to dwell.
Important date for writers and readers to remember: On June 30, 1936, Margaret Mitchell’s blockbuster story of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind, was published. Later, it was made into an unforgettable movie with Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable and the rest is history.
I’d love to hear “Ice Water In The Desert”. I hope Helen will bring it to the next meeting. I really enjoy her writings and how they relate God’s teachings to our everyday lives.
I’ll ask her to do that, Peg. It’s an amazing true story.
