Yesterday, as I was reading Scripture, I came upon II Chronicles 13:5. In that verse is an interesting term, “covenant of salt.” I’m sure I’ve read those words before but yesterday, I took particular notice. Sometimes that happens. A verse that I must have read several times suddenly stands out. I checked out the significance of that term. Salt is a preservative. It was and is important in the lives of mankind. In those days, it was used as a preservative. The Bible mentions salt several times. A covenant, or agreement, was and is a serious, binding thing. Breaking a covenant with God is rife with terrible consequences.
The whole 13th chapter of II Chronicles is fascinating. It tells of the Lord’s protection for those who obey Him and the consequences for those who turn away. One particular verse pretty well sums it up:
“O children of Israel, do not fight against the Lord God of your fathers, for you shall not prosper!” (II Chronicles 13:12.)
That was wonderful advice for Israel and it’s wonderful advice for us. One of my favorite chapters in the Bible is Deuteronomy 28. It further illustrates the truth of II Chronicles 13. I guess I should say the first 14 verses of Deuteronomy 28 are my favorite. The last part of the chapter is pretty hard to read but vitally important. However, if we obey the first 14 verses, we escape the consequences of the last part of the chapter. I think Deuteronomy 28 should be required reading for every person in a position of authority over other people. How wonderful if, at least once a week, someone stood up in our Congress and read the whole chapter to the complete, assembled Senators and Representatives. Can’t you see it now? God’s Word ringing out in that great assemblage? The Bible says that His word is sharper than a two-edged sword. Surely, it would make a difference in the government of our country.
So, that’s my sermon of the day which I didn’t intend to be a sermon but once I get started…well, one thing leads to another. I hope your day is blessed with the many assurances of Deuteronomy 28. Who could want anything better?
God’s way are higher than our ways! Praise Him!
