People are interesting and I like to try to figure out what makes them tick. Usually, after pondering, I give up and decide people are contradictions, a little of this, a whole lot of that and somewhat of the other.
I am not a country music fan, but I like the way Randy Travis sings. The other night, I was watching an old Matlock. Randy Travis had a part in the show and he and Andy sang together. One song they did was, “Nobody’s Darlin’ But Mine.” I love that song and I tried to sing along with them. I had laryngitis and all I could do was squeak, but I tried. It fairly begged for an alto part.
Listening to these two talented men, I thought of another man who liked to sing that song too, a person who was my pattern for contradictions, my dad. Dad was, all at the same time, courageous, stern, gruff. But, he loved a good joke and could laugh at one someone played on him. He liked company, and he liked to sing and dance.
So, when I heard Andy and Randy sing, I also heard another voice, a long-ago voice that was very dear to me, singing a song he loved. For just a few minutes, I enjoyed hearing my dad sing. And I decided, following after my dad’s pattern, that I am a study in contradictions too.
