Confession is Good for the Soul

Confession is Good for the Soul

It depends to whom you are confessing, and what you are confessing, and maybe even when, but, unburdening yourself of a heavy emotional load is certainly healthy. Personally, I confess my sins to God. I confess my faults, not only to Him but to my friends. Confession does leave a person feeling freer, lighter, happier. If we have wronged anyone, the absolute only healthy thing to do is confess that to the person wronged, and ask for forgiveness. It really is good for our souls, our health too, and for our outlook on life.

Having confessed, let’s move on. Sometimes, we get so burdened by our faults or disappointments, or discouragements, that it’s hard to keep going. It’s like trying to run uphill or race through mud (did you ever do that, as a child?) This time of year, with Christmas approaching is a wonderful time to shed old mistakes and heartaches and consign them to the trash heap. That’s where they belong. Don’t, for goodness sake, get rid of them and then fish them out again.

We are much more than our mistakes. We are a living, breathing potential for a wonderful future. Don’t let anyone define you by your wrong decisions or shortcomings or your limitations. We are so much more than all these things wrapped together.

Christmas is coming, the birthday of our Lord Jesus. Because of His birth and death, we can be sure that when we leave our past behind, it stays there. He is all that is good. He is love and forgiveness. The bright Christmas lights, the beautifully decorated trees, the feeling of cheerfulness in the air, the smiles on the faces of strangers, all point to hope and belief, and a new start. All those mistakes we’ve made can be used for our good. They taught us something. They were lessons learned and have made us better persons. We all take wrong turns, but, if we learn, we don’t repeat them. We leave them where they belong–with God.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “This new day is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on the yesterdays.”
