Coffee Mugs and Early Morning

I sit at my computer, looking at the sun slant across my neighbor’s lawn and am grateful they didn’t cut their blue spruce when, a few years ago, it didn’t look too well. I don’t think blue spruces particularly favorite warm climates, preferring states cooler than Arkansas. However, this tree looks beautiful particularly in winter with snow on it. It isn’t my blue spruce but I’ll bet I enjoy it as much as my neighbor does.

Do you have a favorite coffee cup and coffee just doesn’t taste right out of a different mug? I do. I also have a favorite pen, a needlepoint pen with black ink. Of course, the coffee would be the same, and my name would be signed with anything else but these are a couple of idiosyncrasies which seem to make the day go better.

Yesterday as I was driving along the highway in a wooded area, I saw a flash of brown cross in front of me. Knowing it was a deer and, as is the habit with deer, probably a long line of kinsfolk would follow this first one, I slowed down. What a surprise! It wasn’t a lot of deer following, but only a one. The tiniest fawn I’ve ever seen stopped at the edge of the pavement and dropped down into the grass to hide. Its mother, on the opposite side of the highway turned and looked back at her baby. Did he finally cross safely? Did she change her mind and go back to him? I don’t know and if it didn’t end successfully, I don’t want to know. I wish deer and turtles would be happy on only one side of those dangerous, man-made lanes. I’d think that by now it would be ingrained in their DNA: “When you feel solid pavement beneath your feet, don’t cross. Danger!”

This is Tuesday; the week is moving right along and Darcy and Flora are, as usual, in a predicament. I imagine Flora’s coffee pot is hot and I’d better drop in at their new house on Granny Grace’s acres and see just what is going on.
