Come on in, sit down at your computer, and share a cup of coffee with me. Today is that long-awaited election day. Whatever the outcome, I’m glad I live in a country where I can vote as I like without fear of reprisal. I’m sure you are too. Tomorrow, whatever the outcome, I hope we all decide that matters have been settled and we have just as many friends tomorrow as we do today.
So, let’s talk about coffee. Do you remember the Nescafe jingle, “Let’s have another cup of coffee; yes, let’s have a cup of Nescafe”? And, of course, the perking coffee pot for Maxwell House and then, “Maxwell House coffee, good to the last drop.” Sometimes, there’d be an added line: “And that drop’s good too.” And, “The best part of wakin’ up is Folgers in your cup.” Taster’s Choice had a unique commercial at one time, sort of like a soap opera, where a man and woman meet, fall in love, all over a cup of Taster’s Choice. As I sit here, sipping coffee with you, I wonder why the powers that be abandoned these catchy and memorable ads.
The weatherman says this election day will be foggy here in NW Arkansas. I don’t see any sign of it right now but my range of vision is pretty limited. Maybe, if I were driving on the highway, I’d see fog. Fog is treacherous, so if you are driving today, please be aware that you may not be able to see as far down the road as you usually do.
When it comes to voting, I’m sure your mind is made up. You are not in the least foggy about the people you intend to vote for. You have good, solid reasons, unswayed by public opinion because you’ve been digging up facts. You’ve found out for yourself, not taking anybody else’s word for what candidates stand for. Freedom in a wonderful thing.
Misty Morning
Silent, silver strands of fog
Whirl and swirl and quiver
Making misty meadowlands
Into a wispy river.
Spider webs, like shiny ships,
Sail the dripping grasses,
While spider sailors ride the waves
Until the dampness passes.
