Coffee and a Brand New Mystery

Coffee and a Brand New Mystery

Rain tiptoed in some time this morning. I wouldn’t have known, but it left its footprints on my deck. Just a trace, a smattering, but the sky is still dark, so maybe there’s more to come. A portent of a wet Thursday?

As I was writing the Ned book, you know, the one about that old blue moon, I realized I had left Ned on the road for far too long. She was heading out of town to a historic plantation to see the woman who lived there. Miss Evangeline Carver. Miss Evangeline had called Ned and asked her to take pictures of her 18th century mansion. Since Ned loves old houses, you can bet she jumped at the chance.

Ned had had only one previous encounter with the Carver Plantation–when she was a school girl and her teacher took the class there on a field trip. So, Ned was itching to go back, but why would Miss Evangeline want her to take pictures? What was going on?

As she neared the house, driving the same black Ford Escape that had carried her through two other mysteries, the full moon rose as a back drop. Silver moonlight bathed the tall, brick Carver home. All was still and quiet. Not one thing moved. Where was Miss Evangeline?

But, as I said, Ned had been on the road to the mansion for several days while I pondered the next step she was to take. Then, it came to me. Ned was the only one who was supposed to hear Miss Evangeline’s plans, but someone was listening. And, that someone was not at all pleased.

Writing a mystery is a lot of fun.
