The Carriage House Lives Again

The Carriage House Lives Again

If you’ll remember, in Moonlight Can Be Murder, Ned McNeil’s carriage house burned to the ground. In its day, it had been quite a place and it figured pretty heavily in the mystery surrounding Granger Mansion. The burned-down building weighed  on Ned’s mind, reminding her of recent unsavory happenings, so she had it re-built, true to the specifications of the first house. Then, she furnished it. What fun! In By the Fright of the Silvery Moon, we can see the new carriage house and go with Ned, from room to room, as she walks through. I thought you might like to see it too.

The floor of this front room was wide oak planks, polished to a soft patina. On it lay a room-sized rug in patterns of teal, dusty rose, and seafoam green. I had painted the living room as well as the kitchen in warm antique white with an undertone of  butter yellow. A sofa patterned in dusty rose, seafoam green and  aqua sat under the window. Two chairs faced each other; one, a flowered pattern of the same rose and aqua as the sofa, the other, a plaid of rose and mauve. The curtains were rose-colored.

The kitchen window was dressed with a yellow, frilly curtain. A 1950s yellow vinyl and chrome table and matching chairs sat atop a rectangular rug of dark teal, seafoam green and rose. I had chosen dark teal slate for the floor. A small white gas range, a matching refrigerator and an under-the-counter dishwasher completed this sunny room.

A large four-poster bed nearly filled the bedroom, barely leaving room for a walnut dresser and chest. The walls were pale mint green and the curtains a darker shade of the same color.

A bathroom, surprisingly spacious for a carriage house, had room for a claw-foot tub, pedestal sink, and linen closet. The floor was dark slate and the walls were mint green with a frilly, rose-colored curtain at the window.

In Fright, Ned is showing the carriage house to its prospective renter, whose identity shall remain a secret for now. Let me tell you, Ned had fun furnishing that carriage house. I hope you will have fun reading about it and the reason it’s still important in the seond book of Ned McNeil and Granger’s Mansion.
