August Morning

Watering plants on an early August morning has its rewards–for example, it’s the coolest time of the whole day! As I watch water stream from the hose into the thirsty ground, a school child dashes up the hill to catch his bus. Another child walks down the hill to catch a different bus. Is she aware of the pretty morning? Her eyes are on her phone as she walks, and I’m pretty sure her mind is engaged there, not on her surroundings.

It’s fun to see the sun erase the shadows as it rises higher in the sky. The trees behind my neighbor’s house are the first to welcome the light from the top down. Then, the nearer trees, and lastly, the trees in my own yard which remain mysterious until they have to give up their nighttime darkness.

Finally, I wind up the water hose and return to the house where a certain elderly pup watches anxiously. Once I’m inside the house, he relaxes and takes another nap. Keeping an eye on me is an exhausting business. The damp flowers, herbs, and I are ready to get into the day.
