This is an un comfortable post because it goes against the popular narrative, the spin that is accepted by busy people, too concerned with real, up to the minute problems to be worried about something that represents a person and an event more than 150 years ago. I could just keep my opinions to myself and I’ve done that much too often. However, this is such a travesty, I must voice my opinion.
My opinion is that the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue from the park in Charlottesville, Virginia yesterday was wrong. One by one, Confederate statues, or statues of anyone who may have, at one time or the other, said or done something against the popular narrative, are being taken down, defaced, or destroyed. This is, somehow, supposed to promote peace and justice? I think not.
The statue of Lenin is still standing in Seattle. There is also one in Atlantic City and one in New York City (statue of communist dictators in the USA – Bing). Why is it there? Is it a symbol of togetherness or is it a part of American history? Once again, I think not.
President Lincoln had asked Robert E. Lee to command the northern forces, but because of his great love for his home state, Virginia, he could not. He was a brilliant military strategist, beloved by his men and respected by his enemies. After the war, he was a voice of reason and reconciliation, imploring the people of the defeated Southern states to become good citizens of the United States.
History cannot be changed or erased by the removal of statues. However, history as it is viewed by those who have never been taught the truth, certainly can. Why cannot statues remain in place to be looked upon as representing a time past, a time that no longer exists? Why cannot they serve as a reminder that we have made much progress along the road to equality and dignity for all? If we, as a country, and as individuals, do not remember where we have come from, how in the world can we know where we are going?
Another sobering thought: if statues of Americans or pages of history books are obliterated, what is to take their place? Whose narrative will our children be taught? Something will take the place of a vacancy. More statues of Lenin or other dictators?
We have reached the point in America where even expressing admiration for someone who does not agree with politically correct opinions, is frowned upon. Quotes are taken out of context, actions and words are misinterpreted.
What statue or symbol will be removed next? What part of our past will be denigrated? And, most of all, why are these things being done? Why now? What will we have when all the changes are over?
