Will it or won’t it? Will it be wet or will it be dry? Be prepared with an eye on the sky. And if, by chance, we should have rain, The next day, it will rain again! Why? Well, because tomorrow is St. Swithin’s Day and that is an old, a very old legend.
Who was St. Swithin? It seems he actually existed as a bishop way back in the ninth century. His story is an interesting one, if you’d care to look it up.
The story goes that if it rains tomorrow, July 15, we’ll have forty more days of rain. If it doesn’t, forty days without rain will occur. Either eventuality doesn’t seem a very happy one, so we’ll just wait and see.
Weather lore is fun and legends are sometimes engrossing. From them have sprung many fictional tales. However, St. Swithin’s Day is tomorrow. So, let’s just enjoy today and the rest of July, no matter the weather. And, remember, a cozy mystery a day keeps the summer blahs away.
