An Amazing Story

This isn’t St. Patrick’s Day, but, oh well…the world is pretty and green this morning, so here’s a stretch to the imagination.

One soft and misty morning, on a day so fine and rare,

My heart felt light as birdsong, without one single care,

As I strode through the heather into a forest tall,

I heard somebody singing in a voice exceeding small.

Now, who is that, I wondered, as I looked all around,

And tiptoed toward a rosebush and that small and tinny sound.

I saw a tiny fellow in hat and coat of green

With a pot of golden coins, the most I’d ever seen!

“Oh my,” I gasped and stumbled, and fell upon my face

Right in that pile of money in that ferny forest place.

The puny person shouted as he jumped up and down.

He fumed and yelled and glared at me and frowned an awful frown.

“Look what you’ve done, you human! You’ve found me secret store,

And I know you’ll tell others and I’ll be safe no more.”

I shook my head. “Oh no, I won’t; they’d say it wasn’t true

It would sound preposterous; they don’t believe in you.”

His face got red, he stamped his foot and said, “That makes me mad

To not believe in leprechauns is silly and it’s sad.

You take this gold, just this one piece as proof of what you say

Then humans will believe you when you speak about today.”

He vanished and his gold did too and I stood in a trance.

Would I ever tell another if I even had a chance?

Or would it be my secret, and mine alone to hold

About the little man I saw and all his precious gold?
