Alarum Bells

Alarum Bells

Last evening, I sat on my deck and enjoyed the peace and stillness of a lovely summer night. And I thought of others, Christians around the world, who don’t have any peace at all. Yesterday, I had three nice meals and I hope to do so again today; then, I thought of others, Christians around the world who are hungry and thirsty and are seeing their children starve. Today, I look forward to many pleasant hours, peaceful, joyful hours but I am aware there are others around the world, Christians, who don’t have even one pleasant hour or moment.

What can I do, I ask. How can I help those who are so persecuted and set upon, for no crime other than believing in the Lord Jesus? For their belief, they are tortured, killed, and driven from their homes. And, I ask, what can I do?

I thought of Edgar Allen Poe’s poem, “The Bells”, and the story it tells. I thought of the part that goes like this, “Hear the loud alarum bells –
Brazen bells!
What a tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells!:”

For Christians around the world, I would say these bells are ringing for them, for us. It is time to be aware, to be alarmed, but not to panic. What can I do? What can you do? We can pray! I don’t mean half-hearted, weak prayers, but strong prayers, delivered to the Lord with faith believing that only He can change things, asking on behalf of these who are being killed by evil incarnate, that He protect them. He can! And only He can! It is time we prayed.
