Agatha Christie didn’t need them. Mary Higgins Clark doesn’t want them. G. K. Chesterton spurns them and Jeanne M. Dams doesn’t use them. My hero Mary Roberts Rinehart steered clear of them too. They are superfluous, distracting, downright disgusting and completely unnecessary. What am I talking about? Cursing and steamy scenes. These authors wrote/write riveting, absorbing mysteries. My goal is to write an intriguing, page-turning, staying-up-late-at-night-to-finish, goose-pimply mystery devoid of sex scenes or profanity. How do these two small-town ladies find themselves in so many difficult situations? Each chapter seemed to bring a new dilemma to be resolved. I enjoyed this third book in the series – I love to have characters that stay around so I can get to know them. The more I know these characters, the more I like them. Blanche, I’m happy that I read your post. I just wrote Danna and mentioned that my Kay Driscoll mysteries also didn’t have swearing, steamy scenes, and that the protagonist when to church.
I think this is why many readers choose to read cozies because they are more wholesome. Congratulations on making this important list. 🙂
