I feel as if I have known Sharon Rose Mierke for years. Truth is, I’ve never seen her in person. She is the author of the Parson’s Cove series available on Amazon.com. We email each other frequently and enjoy each other’s cozy mysteries. I’ve read every one of the Parson’s Cove series and am always on the look out for the next new one to be published. If you haven’t met Mabel and Flori who live in Parson’s Cove, I hope you take this opportunity to become acquainted with these two friends. As a special bonus, Sharon invited me to guest post at http://thecozycatchronicles.com/…/who-is-that-character-any… this morning. Thanks, Sharon!

What a privilege to add a few of my thoughts to Blanche Manos’ blog. I appreciate the invitation.
I will begin by telling you a little about my writing and myself. I write the Parson’s Cove Cozy Mystery series for Cozy Cat Press. My protagonist is an older woman named Mabel Wickles. She is an unmarried woman who lives alone with her cats and owns a shop named Mabel’s Fables and Things. Her best friend, Flori Flanders, usually accompanies Mabel on her adventures. Her motive is not to help solve the murder but to keep Mabel from getting herself killed.
The two women first entered my writing life when I wrote a short story for Woman’s Worldseveral years ago. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Mabel and Flori could probably get into enough trouble to fill a book. Thus, the series began!
Blanche was wondering how I chose a town named Parson’s Cove. I don’t remember when or how the name popped into my head – probably in the middle of the night. However, it was easy to write about a small town; my family moved to several as I was growing up – five, to be exact. Every town or village had its own personality and usually a few quirky characters. I don’t remember any having a ‘Mabel’ but then I don’t recall any murders needing to be solved either!
Perhaps there is a bit of ‘Mabel’ in me because I have no problem taking over her personality as I write. In fact, that is one of the reasons I love writing. It never ceases to amaze me how a writer has the power to create a protagonist and then choose what that person will be like. You always have to keep in mind that no one is perfect so no matter how much you love your character, you have to show weaknesses as well as strengths. With each book I write, Mabel becomes more real to me. In fact, sometimes she even surprises me!
There are now six Parson’s Cove books and I have a feeling there will be more as I can’t see Mabel ever retiring. Or, am I saying that I can’t see myself ever retiring? Maybe we’re more alike than I care to admit.
