Watering herbs and flowers on a summer morning has its own rewards. In the first place, mornings are cool and quiet. In the second place, being near herbs is reward in itself. They smell wonderful. This past spring, I planted an array of herbs in a large planter. They loved it there and thrived. Sage, lemon thyme, mints, they are in a happy jumble and their combined fragrances are heady.
Wandering over the yard, I spied a small, round object. I picked it up and found it was either a dime or a very thin penny–it’s hard to tell which until I scrub it up. I’m pretty sure I know where it came from and it has lain in my yard for a number of years. When my grandchildren were small, I’d bury a handful of small coins beside the porch. Then, they would dig for buried treasure. It was fun! They got to keep whatever coins they found. This dime must have been a vagrant that they missed and, through the years, washed to the surface by the rains. It brought back happy memories.
Watering the yard is an adventure. The flowers enjoy it and so do I.
