A Smattering

A Smattering

Ah yes, deep, philosophical, plumbing-the-depths thoughts and soul-searching questions this morning as I sip my first cup of Folgers and look out at a dark, wet world. Why is it that the white clover blooms remind me of a miniature field of cotton against the deep green grass?

And, how high will my lawn grow before it’s dry enough to mow again? How much does a goat cost and would the city council allow live, lively natural four-footed mowers? That would certainly be the climate-friendly way to go. Goats would fertilize the yard, earn their keep by munching, and provide an interesting feature to passers-by on the street. It’s doubtful that a goat would mind grass that’s dripping with rain. Of course, goats can’t tell the difference between a weed and a flower but that’s a negative thought on this Friday morning and negative thoughts are banished!

Would a goat fit into the Darcy and Flora cozy mystery series? Goat are, quite truthfully, cute, curious, smart and pesky to the Nth degree. So far, a mule resides on a farm near Levi, a hound dog lives with Jasper and Pat, one or more owls flit through the trees, a cat curls up in the hundred-year old farmhouse, and various and sundry wild creatures prowl through the woods. But a goat? I don’t know.

My thoughts, like a rush of racing raindrops, are here and there, a smattering of this and a smattering of that. It’s probably time for another cup of Folgers!

  1. I’ve often thought a goat or two would do wonders in the back yard.

    • And a nanny goat would probably pay for her keep with goat milk which is really healthier than cows’ milk. Plus, if she had a family, the kids would be so entertaining. Of course, there would be the occasional misdemeanor like climbing the fence, clattering down the street and being picked up by a patrolman and the resultant fine and all that, but hey! Nobody’s perfect.
