Do you know the comfort of a warm quilt, folded into half, thrown over your head and shoulders like a shawl? It is even warmer than a coat and cap because there are no gaps between coat or cap for the cold to get in. Anyway, the weather is shivery and forecast to get downright nasty with sleet and ice, so I think of warming things, snuggly, comforting things. I guess it harkens back to olden days when people made sure woodpiles were full, pantries were stocked, and the animals had enough hay in the barn before a blizzard. It’s my way of dealing with it.
Cold feet and headaches go with winter. I remember an old remedy for a headache was to make sure your feet were warm. And, do you know, it works! There’s a scientific reason for that too, which escapes me at the moment.
I remember holding my pillow over the wood-burning stove before I went to bed in the winter. Then, I’d hurry to bed, climb in, and put my head down on a nice, warm pillow. It helped!
Of course, a good supply of cocoa, tea, and coffee are always helpful. So is a warm fire and plenty of books. I’m sure you have your own cozy comforts that you gather around you like that quilt when actual winter winds chill the day or when hurts and worries chill the heart.
