A Homey, Lovely Mess

Today is a special day, a national holiday that I’ll bet you are not aware of. I wasn’t. It is a day to gladden the cockles of my heart and take a load of guilt off my shoulders. Now, who wouldn’t want a holiday like that?

You know that sink full of dirty dishes in the kitchen? Are you well acquainted with those unmade beds, baskets of wrinkled and dirty clothes in the laundry room, that layer of dust atop the book case? Well, don’t touch them! Don’t lift a finger! Just grab a cup of coffee and a book and close your eyes to all housework because today…well, today is really special.

You’ll have to decide for yourself what is work and what may be therapy. After all, some people think deep and creative thoughts while plunging their hands into a sink full of warm, sudsy water. And, personally speaking, I’ve smoothed out quite a few worries while ironing out wrinkles from a pair of jeans. And the feeling of having a closet of fresh-smelling, crisp clothes is akin to having climbed Mount Everest (I think). But none of that today!

Sometimes when I lie in bed at night, instead of counting sheep, I count the tasks completed: floors are mopped, bathrooms sparkling, oven cleaned and I fall asleep because just thinking about all that work makes me so-o-o tired!

Housework is good therapy, no doubt about it; but again, I’m just speaking for myself. However, today, I’ll have to count on a hot caramel mocha coffee or a good mystery or maybe a chat with a friend for therapy because today, housework is out!! I’ll ignore it. Won’t lift a finger! My house will remain a mess because I’ve just found out–today is National No Housework Day!
