Yesterday was a beautiful, sunny day, too pretty to stay indoors. So, I went for more plants and herbs. Only thing about my yard is that most plants require a degree of sunshine and my back yard is shady. This is due to a willow oak, a maple, and a mulberry tree. So, instead of putting flowers in my planters in the front yard, why not put herbs and a few vegetables? I dug and planted for nearly two hours and now the pots have basil, thyme, rosemary, lavender, two tomato plants, and a lovely pink geranium. Nice!
As a special bonus this spring, I saw two Baltimore Orioles! First time I’ve ever seen a Baltimore Oriole. Such beautiful birds. I have a feeling they were just passing through, but I felt blessed for them to grace my back yard.
Even the crepe myrtles are starting to have leaves. They are always the last ones to leaf out, but my small hawthorn? I see no sign of life and that makes me sad. It did so well last summer and fall. I watered it faithfully, so, what’s wrong? I’m hoping it is just waiting a bit. If those rocks in the planters look strange, let me tell you that they are important. A few generations of squirrels live in my yard–squirrels who love to dig up plants. The rocks may help them resist temptation. I hope.
I dug out my small yard decorations. O’Malley is back guarding the front porch. His cheerful smile and sunny outlook make the day brighter. It wouldn’t be spring without O’Malley.
