A Brand New Day

A Brand New Day

It was a good way to start a brand new day. I opened the blinds onto the deck this morning, and there was a bright red cardinal. He cocked his head, hopped over to a chair, then onto a deck railing, all the while gazing at me. Did he want to tell me something? He was so bright and so cheerful that he made me feel the same way.

We are definitely in a rainy season and I’m glad for the sake of our plants. Of course, it is rather hard to get seeds and seedlings into the ground unless they are planted in mud, which is what I did yesterday.

I’ve told you about the pretty little hawthorn tree or bush that volunteered to come up in one of my pots. Well, it had grown so much that it definitely needed more room. So, yesterday, while sprinkles of rain fell, I re-potted that little fellow into a larger pot. I hope it likes it there and grows. Hawthorns are pretty neat and have such an interesting history. It’s sometimes called a thorn apple or May tree. A hawthorn was the Easter egg tree at Etta. Mom and her sisters hung tiny eggshell baskets on the thorns. I like hawthorns!

Nemo thought the day was starting right too. He had gone outdoors after waking up, had his breakfast, a chewy bone, then came in and sat beside me, staring at me. I looked down from the computer and there he was, bright eyes shining, clearly expecting me to do something. So, I said, “Show me what you want? Do you want to go back out? Are you still hungry?”

Although he doesn’t talk in words, he certainly communicates. I guessed that he thought he was due a snack. Sure enough, when I offered him one, that suited him fine. Now, he’s all content and ready for another nap.

Instead of getting brighter, the morning grows darker. It must be there’s more rain on the way. But, that’s fine. The cardinal, the hawthorn, Nemo and I approve. They are all a good start to a brand new day.
