“Wire Brier, Limberlock, three geese in a flock. One flew east, one flew west, one flew over the cuckoo’s nest.” How many of you heard this or played the game on childish fingers? Jane’s aunt introduced her to the rhyme years ago. I learned it from my mother and passed it on to Matt and then to Sara and Nathan. Some of our group of Cozy Critters had never heard of it but they know about it now!
“We have all this wealth of information and nobody ever asks us anything,” Jane said. But, yesterday, she shared a lot of that wealth with us. Following in her grandmother’s footsteps is Jane’s granddaughter Allison. Jane read two of Allison’s thoughtful poems, There’ll Never Be Another Me and You Are You. Good advice for all of us, young and old.
A delightful book from 1924, belonging to Jane’s mother, is a real treasure. This was from Jane’s mom’s school days, complete with a picture of her teacher and filled with short verses, sixty-one of them.
I’m always amazed at Jane’s ability to write on short notice. She came to the critique feeling hungry because she hadn’t had time for lunch. The reason? Inspiration struck at eleven o’clock and the critique was at one o’clock but the result was a wonderful poem called The Old Shed. Thanks, Jane, for your dedication and suffering for a good cause!
I’m constantly amazed at Carolyn’s creativity. She paints beautifully and also writes insightful pieces and poetry but yesterday I found out she writes cookbooks. Or, at least, one wonderful cookbook complete with her pictures, poetry, and observations. It is neatly and attractively bound. Carolyn still uses this cookbook and some day will pass it on to her children who, in turn, will hand it down to their children. What a treasure it will be to have this heirloom in their family.
Carolyn did well at the arts and crafts fair in War Eagle in October. She sold much of her art work and met some mighty interesting people who had unusual stories to tell which, I’m sure, she stored away for future use in a children’s book.
Peg has a reading dilemma. It is perplexing and aggravating but Peg will, doubtless, triumph. It has to do with her iPad and a technological glitch. Because of something that happened out there in the nether world of cyberspace, an impressive list of books to be read simply vanished. Hopefully, they will be located and will fly back home to Peg’s house but, until they do, she’ll be trekking to our local library. Libraries hold a wealth of information and are wonderful things but Peg had gotten used to the convenience of having any book that she wanted instantly available without having to move an inch.
Nancy is always busy with speaking engagements or writing or music or other activities that she loves. On her way back from speaking in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, she got a really great view of the recent super moon. With the sunset behind her and the moon in front, Nancy wasn’t sure which was more impressive. One thing she was sure of: God’s protection.
As well as her book, The Grace Impact, she has a story, Snapshots of God’s Promises in a compilation of God’s Pledge to Provide in Abba’s Promise.
I read a chapter in By the Fright of the Silvery Moon and we discussed this work in progress. I shared a story my mother wrote, many years ago, about a trip through a cave in Cherokee County. I’ll put that story on this blog some time in the future. Keeping in the tradition of family, I read a few highlights from a memoir my niece Missy is putting together of my brother’s childhood days.
It was a fun two hours and the fact that we were able to get together despite busy schedules made us a little light-headed as well as light-hearted. I felt singularly blessed to have such talent assembled around my hundred year old table. Coffee and chocolate, a fire in the fireplace, the house decorated for Christmas, and good friends talking about writing; what better way to spend a chilly afternoon, the last day in the month of November?
