Another Place, Somewhere in the Fog

Another Place, Somewhere in the Fog

Come with me to another place this morning. You may have been there or you may not. It’s a small town, a busy, bustling town, but it is an old town and, as with all old towns, it has its secrets.

Many aged houses populate the town and each has a story to tell. Ned O’Neil’s house has a history that is murkier than most. Ned lives here with only a small, gray cat named Penny for company.

Ned is awakened one October night by a horrifying nightmare. Nerves rattled, she goes downstairs to the kitchen for a cup of calming tea but, as she passes a window, she sees something beside the old well in her yard. An animal steps into the moonlight, points its nose toward the stars,  and howls–an eerie, haunting, drawn-out wail that raises goose bumps on Ned’s arms.

The morning dawns gray and foggy. The fog is so thick, it is difficult to see but Ned drives to Grandy’s coffee shop to meet with three friends. On the way home, something happens–something so chilling, fear paralyzes her mind and she nearly makes a deadly mistake.

From the sequel to Moonlight Can Be Murder, By the Fright of the Silvery Moon:

The fog grew so dense that my windshield wipers did little good. The headlights of my Ford Escape made an eerie, blurred tunnel through the gray afternoon. Dull halos glimmered around the street lights, but they did little good in dispelling the clinging mist. Strange, the way fog could change the most familiar surroundings into an alien landscape.

I turned the corner onto State Street and noticed head lights glimmering behind me. The driver was following much too closely for safety. Turning off State onto Winslow Drive, I checked my rear view mirror again. The other car turned too; it was almost on my bumper.

My hands shook and my heart felt as if it would beat out of my jacket. That unknown driver was pursuing me. I was approaching my long driveway. Should I pull in, jump from my car and run for the house? Would he follow me to the porch? Could I unlock the door and get safely inside before he reached me?
