Saturday’s Inspiration

Yesterday afternoon was so beautiful and warm, I decided yard work was in order. Finding an old hat and last year’s gloves, I grabbed a large trash bag and my trusty rake and set to work. Nemo would have helped if he could, but the best he could do was protect the yard from lions and tigers. He did a good job. Not one dared show its face.004

It was fun to see tiny green shoots nestling under last year’s leaves but a niggling worry kept intruding. What if this unseasonably warm weather is merely winter’s ruse? What if it’s trying to lull me into believing spring is near and then delivers a frigid surprise? Keeping that in mind, I raked around those hardy herbs poking through the ground,  tenderly re-covered them and concentrated on the grass.

One full trash bag later, I sat down in a deck chair to rest a bit. Freshly-filled bird baths sparkled in the sun. Black-capped chickadees, a cardinal, several goldfinches and a stately blackbird which glistened like polished ebony, ventured back into the yard. This wasn’t a magnificent start to spring cleaning, but it was a beginning. The best part was enjoying the warmth and beauty of God’s creation. Nemo seemed to feel the same way.

  1. A lovely description of an afternoon well spent. I don’t have a little doggie for company, but Gabriel, our miniature donkey, trotted along the fence line as I raked leaves yesterday…I rather think it was more for the treats I gave him than a desire for company. Gabriel is two years old and dashes around the fields with the calves. I’m certain one day he will moo instead of braying. I also hope we don’t have a cold snap, the forsythia is bursting into bloom…..Love the springtime.
