This morning, Moonlight Can Be Murder is featured on Barbara A. Martin’s Facebook page. Thanks, Barbara. http://www.folkstalesthings.com/Special-Events-.html
An interesting item popped up on a news website this morning: a ghost town for sale. Swett, South Dakota, is offered for a mere $250,000. There’s not much there, according to the report, just a gas station, museum, a bar and a store, but it looks pretty. It certainly isn’t crowded. No crime, no smog, just plenty of wide open spaces.
Who would be my neighbors? Would I hear coyotes at night? What else would I hear? Ghosts? What kind, how many, and are they friendly? Maybe the ghosts consider it their town and would not like anybody else moving in. Maybe it’s called a ghost town for a good reason.
But, wait a minute! I could be my own mayor and set a tax scale: none! And, believe me, it’d be a dandy place to write. Just think of how the imagination could soar, unfettered. Why, the sky would be the limit.
No intrusions, nothing whatsoever to do but write. From looking at the location, I’d say I should not stray very far from town because I might never find my way back and possibly die way out there on the prairie with nothing but prairie dogs and coyotes to mourn my passing. And the wind to sing a sad song and…well, I’m getting a lump in my throat.
It is certainly a long way from Levi, Oklahoma where Darcy and Flora live and from Ednalee, the home of Ned McNeil. Could I write about their exploits where trees and rivers and hills are only a memory? On second thought, I’ll just admire Swett from afar and wish it the best of luck and wait to see who, if any, hardy souls would like to own a whole town.
