A Little Levity

A Little Levity

“Ask your doctor. It could be that xyqimiticinz is for you!” (Please don’t ask for this at your pharmacy. It isn’t there. I hope.) Television commercials are sometimes funny, revolting, or downright ridiculous. The ads touting cures for your ills are all of these. I think there must be a pill for every illness under the sun.But now the commercials are required to list a few of the possible side effects. That tiny little innocuous tablet or capsule may indeed cure what ails you but it could also cause ingrown toenails, baldness, splotchy skin, gout, the seven-year itch; in rare cases, you might end up dead. But, not to worry, you won’t have that original disease that sent you to the pharmacy in the first place! That’s really wonderful, right?

Someone visiting from another planet where there are no television commercials might, after watching a day of TV, decide that we are the sickest people in the universe. If we weren’t sick to begin with, we would be by the time we’d watched all the ads touting various meds for innumerable ailments.

It’s all good though. Commercials are sometimes the bright spot in a program. It depends on the way I look at it. In spite of the serious nature of the ads, they do contain moments of hilarity, grim humor, ridiculous truths, and weird warnings. And a merry heart, so the Proverb goes, is as good as a medicine.

In their new home, Darcy and Flora have an herb garden. Now, herbs, as we know, are not only pretty and beneficial to nature, they also aid in healing. But, beware! Some herbs have an attitude. They bear watching and handling with the utmost caution.

  1. I booted television out of my house long ago–being totally DONE with all such commercials, vicious newscasters, violent programming, and word usage that made me cringe, ad nauseum. (I read the newspaper and get news online where I can instantly check its veracity.) But I digress–this is a hoot and so true!! I tend to visit the health store before the pharmacy, although I’m a “good girl” and take what’s prescribed (which isn’t much). One of my d-i-ls grew herbs for a while–now she’s growing babies! And, lovely as herbs are, those babies are much sweeter to snuggle and squeeze!

    • Thanks for your interesting comment, Judy. You are to be commended for kicking out your TV. I certainly watch a lot less of it now. All those channels and very little is worth watching. I still grow some herbs. They are pretty and the smell is delicious!
