There’s an old song, “In Times Like These.” We used to sing it a lot at General Baptist in Tahlequah. My dear friend Lola was part of a group who sang it as special music on Sunday morning. It had a good message, apt for then, apt for today. Another song, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” was along the same topic, although very different in tone.
As you know, I have lots of pictures of ancient castles in Ireland; towers, fortresses, built hundreds of years ago for protection. When enemies came, the people would run to these fortresses. They were a pretty good defense for a long time. But, even they couldn’t always keep out persistent intruders.
Today, with one horrific event after the other assaulting our eyes and ears through the news media, we definitely need a fortress, walls that cannot be scaled, defenses that cannot be shaken. Mortals can’t build anything this trustworthy. The Christian’s only fail-proof fortress is God. I don’t know how to handle these enemy assaults but God does.
Some of the most comforting verses in Scripture are II Samuel 5:24 and Judges 7:19-22. God did what was for David and Gideon, impossible. But with God, nothing is impossible. That’s good to remember, in times like these.
