I Was Just Thinking

I Was Just Thinking

Thoughts are funny things. Sometimes they meander idly through my mind, going here, going there. Some thoughts reach logical conclusions; some never conclude but have a question mark after them.

At other times, with no warning, an idea will pop up. These thoughts are sudden and unexpected, an “Aha” moment, sort of like those after-the-rain  mushrooms that sometimes appear in my grassy yard. They are just there!   005

I picked up the mail Saturday and in it was a delightful surprise. An actual, not virtual mind you, but an honest-to-goodness greeting card from a dear friend came in my honest-to-goodness mailbox. The card was lavender and had a pretty verse about friends being reminders of the Father’s love. That verse was similar to something else I read last week, about  God using us to encourage others. The little card certainly blessed me and even though Carol didn’t know I was feeling sort of low, there came that happy reminder that God knew.

Wandering back to my house,  I noticed what looked like a strawberry in the grass. Bending closer, I saw it was not a strawberry, but a fascinating tiny fungus known as a toadstool or mushroom. Certainly not edible but a bright and happy surprise.

These mushrooms are not edible for humans but can some animals digest them? Something, maybe a squirrel, had nibbled on one. I haven’t seen any squirrels moping around or sluggish ‘possums so maybe animals have a secret enzyme that lets them eat.  Or not.

As I stepped up on my porch, a verse of Scripture popped into my head. My dad said long ago he heard a young child quote James 4:10, “Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up.” Only the youngster said “boost” instead of “lift”. I kind of like that. We all need a boost now and then, like the boost I got when I saw Carol’s card and the red mushrooms and remembered that God knows all about all of us and our need for encouragement.

Those were my thoughts, the meandering ones and the pop-up ones. It’s amazing what insights occurred between my mailbox and my front porch, brought on by those strawberry-red mushrooms.                     ___________________________________________________
